Ethiopia is a multi ethnic state with a great variety of languages, the main three languages are Amharic, Oromigna, Guragigna, Tigrigna and others. It has its own alphabet, is also the 2nd most spoken Semitic language in the world after Arabic. Amharic is widely spoken across the nation and is the official language of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

Amharic is also the working language of several of the states within the federal system including the Amhara Region and the multi-ethnic Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region. Outside Ethiopia Amharic is the language of some 2.7 million emigrants (notably in Canada, United States and Sweden).

It is not so difficult to find someone who speaks at least fractured English in Ethiopia, English is also the language of instruction in secondary schools and higher institutes, however it is important for tourists and travelers to Ethiopia to know some Amharic languages
